Man City urge fans to back the FIFA World Cup bid
11th September 2009
Manchester City will urge its supporters attending tomorrow’s clash with Arsenal to follow in the footsteps of Mike Summerbee and Mark Hughes and back Manchester’s bid to become a host city for an England 2018 World Cup.
Almost 4,000 people have already pledged their support, but Manchester is keen to get as many supporters as possible before November, when the city’s bid is submitted to the FA.
The pledge website is: www.manchesterworldsport.com
As well as adverts in the match day programme, the club plans to make an announcement at half time to urge the sell-out crowd to get behind the bid.
Sir Richard Leese, Manchester City Council leader said: “The World Cup is arguably the greatest sporting spectacle on the planet and bringing it to Manchester would be an unforgettable occasion. We believe we have impeccable credentials to be a host city, including a unique bid using the stadia of both Manchester clubs.
“But other cities are vying for the right to host World Cup games if England’s bid is successful and it’s really important that people here show how much we want it.”
The bid is led by Manchester City Council, with support from Manchester City, Manchester United, Salford City Council, Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council, Greater Manchester Police, GMPTE, Manchester Airport, the NHS and Marketing Manchester.
