Manchester’s football elite signed up by FA to help England bag 2018 World Cup

27th October 2009

A host of Manchester’s premiership players, ex-team managers and footballing legends have been signed up by the FA to act as ambassadors for England’s 2018 FIFA World Cup bid.

Players including Wayne Rooney, Robinho and Roque Santa Cruz have been enlisted along with former city managers Stuart Pearce and Sven Goran Eriksson.

Each ambassador will offer invaluable support to England 2018 at home and abroad in a variety of ways, including attendance of bid events and international matches, use of their image in promotional materials and meetings with key football stakeholders.

The global reputation of the ambassadors will help positively showcase England 2018 internationally as well as continue to build public support for the World Cup Bid in England.

In total, 17 of the FA’s 2018 ambassadors have strong links with Manchester – having played for or managed one of the city’s premiership teams.

The FA will announce in December which of the 16 UK cities currently up for consideration will form part of their final bid to FIFA. Until then, the public can still pledge their support for Manchester’s host city bid at: www.manchesterworldsport.com
