Manchester welcomes Conservative Party Conference

1st October 2009

Manchester is looking forward to hosting the Conservative Party Annual Conference 2009, building on the city’s growing reputation as an international conference venue.

Manchester has been ranked one of the world's most successful conference destinations, boasting sophisticated infrastructure to support major UK and international conferences and meetings.

The Labour Party Conference last September generated £16 million in economic benefit.

Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, said:  "Manchester's reputation as a national and international conference centre has helped us secure another major political conference. Building on our experience and expertise we will ensure the Conservative  Party Conference 2009  is a resounding success for delegates, residents and the city as a whole."

Angie Robinson, Chief Executive of Greater Manchester Chamber, said: "We are delighted to be welcoming the Conservative Party Conference to Manchester for the first time. It is great news for the city and will bring in a significant amount of money, particularly for the city’s hospitality and retail trade. We are sure that delegates will receive a warm Manchester welcome and it's good to see they will have an opportunity to venture out of the immediate conference area thanks to the wide range of events the Conservatives have planned at a variety of venues throughout the city centre."

Andrew Stokes, Chief Executive of Marketing Manchester, said: “The political party conferences that Manchester has played host to in recent years have become something of a shining example of the city’s strength at partnership working. Whilst, of course, helping to promote Manchester in the business tourism world – it is important that we make these events benefit the local community – which is something I think the city improves on with each new political party conference we host.”

Lesley Tomlinson, Chief Executive of Manchester Central said: “The current £20 million redevelopment programme to expand and enhance the venue’s facilities is really starting to pay dividends. It is only by having a world-class venue that we can welcome conferences as significant as this.”
